Search has changed. Dane Frederiksen explains why B2B companies keep getting summarized out of Google's AI Overviews, and the one content move that puts you back in the results.

Key Takeaways

  • Text content gets scraped and summarized by AI Overviews, often without credit or citation.
  • Google owns both search and YouTube, so video answers can force their way into results.
  • Buyers do about 80% of their research before they will talk to sales.
  • Answer the specific buyer question, in buyer language, in the first 10 seconds of the video.
  • Map your content to the buyer journey with "content bingo" to find the gaps.

This fits inside a bigger picture. If you want the foundation first, here's the full picture.

Why AI Overviews skip your text content

Your blog posts are feeding the machine, not your pipeline. AI Overviews are here now, and how you show up there is only partially up to you. Text content gets scraped and summarized quite easily. When that happens, you might not get credit, get cited, or even get recommended.

That is the trap most B2B content teams are in. They keep publishing the content that is easy to make, and Google's AI keeps answering the buyer's question with a summary. The buyer gets the answer. You get nothing.

Google does the Googling, and Google owns YouTube

There is something you can do about it, and it is video. YouTube video in particular. Dane's reasoning is simple: Google makes billions of dollars off the advertising views on YouTube, and Google owns search.

"They own search. Google does the Googling." — Dane Frederiksen

So if you want answers to buyer questions to come up, you can force that into the search results by having video answers to those questions on YouTube. If your video is the best answer to the buyer question, you have a higher chance of showing up as that answer.

Brand videos, podcasts, and conversational content are all helpful. They build brand, trust, and visibility. But unless you are going into detail answering the questions buyers are actually searching, somebody else is.

Buyers do 80% of the journey without you

Buyers run their own research today. They work through most of the buyer journey on their own, maybe 80% of the way, before they are willing to have a conversation or talk to sales.

That changes the stakes. If you are not providing the answer content they are researching with, somebody else is. And that means you do not have a seat at the table when the shortlist gets made.

What a video answer needs to do in the first 10 seconds

The quickest, best, easiest way Dane knows to make this work is to make video answers to buyer questions. The format matters:

  • One specific answer to one specific question
  • Stated in the buyer's language
  • Delivered in the first 10 seconds of the video
  • Followed by the elaboration: why they should care, and how you know this

The longer-form content still has a place. But the answer-first video is the hack right now.

Content malnutrition: the diagnosis

If you do not have this kind of video content, you are probably suffering from what Dane calls content malnutrition. You have been putting content out there, but it is the content you want to put out, or the content that is easy, like text and blog posts.

Video is traditionally harder. It takes more of a lift. But when done right, it carries a lot more weight:

"It's got visuals, audio and text in form of transcripts. You're putting yourself out there, your reputation, your personality." — Dane Frederiksen

A video answer, by definition, has more weight than another blog post saying the same thing. Or at least it can.

Play content bingo to find your gaps

To figure out where to start, Dane looks at your content mix and plays what he calls content bingo. Map your content against the questions buyers ask at each stage:

  • Early journey: What is this thing? How does it work?
  • Middle journey: Is this the right thing for me? What are the alternatives?
  • Late journey: Case studies and pricing, right before they buy.

Wherever you have empty boxes on the bingo card, that is a great place to start making video answers.

How Dane helps companies fix this

The first step is an audit of where you stand. Are you showing up in AI search? Are your competitors? What questions are buyers asking that you could answer on video?

From there, the work is either updating your YouTube page or getting one launched: thumbnails, page optimization, and the answer content to populate it. The goal is simple. Do not be invisible in the video buyer journey that is already happening, whether you are part of it or not.

Still getting your head around this? Start with the foundation. It's the foundation the rest of this sits on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't my content show up in Google AI Overviews?

Text content gets scraped and summarized easily, and you might not get credit, get cited, or get recommended. The AI answers the buyer's question with a summary of your work, and the buyer never sees your name.

How does YouTube video help you show up in AI search?

Google owns both search and YouTube, and it makes billions from YouTube advertising views. Video answers to buyer questions can force their way into search results. If your video is the best answer to a buyer question, you have a higher chance of showing up as that answer.

What is content malnutrition?

Content malnutrition is Dane Frederiksen's term for a content mix built from what is easy to make, like text and blog content, instead of what buyers are actually searching for. The fix is video answers to specific buyer questions.

What should a video answer look like?

Answer the specific question, in the buyer's language, in the first 10 seconds. Then add the elaboration: why they should care and how you know this. One video, one question, answer first.

How do I figure out which buyer questions to answer first?

Play content bingo. Map your existing content against the buyer journey: early questions like "what is this and how does it work," middle questions like "is this right for me and what are the alternatives," and late questions like case studies and pricing. Start where the boxes are empty.

So I want to talk a little bit about how search has changed and what that's going to mean for you as a B2B company. So, you know, the AI overviews are here now and how you show up there is partially up to you. If you have text content, that can be scraped and summarized quite easily and you might not get credit or get cited or even recommended there.

But there is something you can do and it's video, and it's YouTube video in particular, and I'll tell you why. Because Google makes billions and billions of dollars off the views from advertising that they get on YouTube. And so they own search. Google does the Googling. And so if you want your answers to buyer questions to come up, you can force that into the search results by having video answers to buyer questions on YouTube. And if they are the best answer to the buyer question, you have a higher chance of showing up as that answer.

Now, a lot of content people put out there are brand videos, podcasts, conversational stuff. That's all helpful and it's good for building a brand and building trust and building visibility. But unless you're actually going into detail answering the questions the buyers are looking for, then somebody else is. Because they're doing their buyer journey research on their own without you. For most of the way through, it's maybe like 80% of the way before they're willing to have a conversation or talk to sales. So if you're not providing that content, somebody else is, and that means that you don't have a seat at the table.

So the quickest, best, easiest way that I know to actually make that work for you is to make those video answers to buyer questions. Specific answers to specific questions in the buyer language in the first 10 seconds of your video, and then any elaboration that they might need about why they care, how you know this, things like that. The longer form stuff is going to be media. So I think that's the hack right now.

If you don't have this kind of video content, you're probably suffering from what I call content malnutrition, which means you've been putting content out there that you want to put out there, or that's easy, like text content, blog content. Video traditionally is a little harder. And so it takes a little bit more of a lift, but when done right, it actually has a lot more weight. It's got visuals, audio and text in form of transcripts. You're putting yourself out there, your reputation, your personality. So it just by definition has more weight, or at least it can.

So what I like to do is look at your, basically your content mix and play what I call content bingo. So if you think about the beginning of a buyer journey, the questions they're going to have, you know, what is this thing? You know, how does it work? Things like that. And in the middle, they're evaluating like, is this the right thing for me? What are the alternatives? And then later, they might be looking like case studies and pricing right before they buy. So depending on where you have or don't have content, that's a great place to start. It's just start to cover all the boxes on your content bingo card, as it were.

So if this is something that you're interested in looking at for your company, this is how I help my clients. First thing we're going to do is just look at an audit of where you stand. Are you showing up? Are your competitors showing up? And what are the questions that buyers are asking that we can make answers for you to get you either update your YouTube page or get you one launched? We're talking thumbnails, page optimization, and the content to actually populate the page so that you are not left invisible from the video discussion or the video buyer journey that they're actually on, whether you're a part of that or not. So just reach out if you want some help.
